My
Story
This is why I do what I do
I believe that there is a warrior inside every woman who has been a victim of domestic abuse. I believe that she can regain her hope and joy, and live a happy life even after being subjected to intimate partner violence. I’m doing it and you can too!
HOW I GOT STARTED
I first fell in love with crocheting after leaving an abusive relationship. I was a new mom, out of work, out of luck, and at rock bottom. My daughter deserved better than being in a home filled with anger and hatred so for her safety and mine, I moved in with my sister. After months of unsuccessful job hunting, I felt hopeless. I needed a distraction.

I had first gotten the idea to learn to crochet when I was pregnant but I believed my ex when he said I’d never be good at it. But when I was at the end of my rope and about to give up, I decided to give crocheting a try. My first project was a little hat for my then 1-year-old that I finished after three days of replaying the instruction video on YouTube.

It wasn’t perfect but I loved it. And so did others. It became a conversation starter. It helped me to open up about my domestic violence story. I was shocked to see how many women could identify with my experience!

Crocheting, once a simple craft, became a powerful icebreaker, a catalyst for conversations around this sensitive issue. What began as a personal endeavor soon evolved into something greater. Requests for crocheted bags and various handcrafted items started pouring in, and thus, Moni's Voice was born. Not only was I providing exquisite handcrafted goods, but I also offered vital information, resources, and support for those battling abuse based on what I have learned. Crafting became more than just a hobby; it became a form of therapeutic expression that instilled value and self-worth in my customers.
In 2022, we proudly rebranded and registered as Moni’s Voice, a name that reflects our unwavering commitment to giving survivors a voice and a platform to heal. Despite limited financial resources, our growth has been nothing short of remarkable. Moni’s Voice has been featured in local newspapers, graced local television screens, and resonated on both local and international radio waves, podcasts, and websites.

Our products have evolved to encapsulate the essence of Jamaican culture, catering to our customers' expectations of uniquely Jamaican craftsmanship. This evolution has led us to expand into the tourism sector, with our crocheted items now adorning the shelves of local hotel gift shops and craft stores. Moni’s Voice serves customers, both retail and wholesale, across the globe, with a growing presence in the USA, Canada, and the UK.
Crocheting made me feel alive for the first in a very long time. I want to show you how you can feel alive again after abuse. Join me on my journey and allow me to show you how you can use crocheting as a form of therapy. I’ll also be including information on domestic abuse, and partner violence from my research and my own experiences.
You are a lioness. Own your voice and roar!
